survival. Without a job one faces an uncertain future, possible poverty, and a way of life forever gone. Many of the factors which contribute toward unemployment are rooted in fiscal problems while many other factors have a social cause. Social causes such as discrimination, corporate down-sizing and job exportation, are just a few of the factors known to affect the unemployment figures at the current time. Many panic when they view the recent statistics, but those who adhere to the conflict perspective of sociological study view it as part of a greater and continual cycle. David Corn in his book, The Lies of George W. Bush, theorizes that the domestic situation seems to be the direst in America(Corn 2003). Unemployment is still high in many areas which manages to effect other areas in the domestic arena. For example, people who are unemployed do not shop; they do not spend. Given this, then, the shop owners and retail outlets do not sell as much as they did before. The GNP drops and the country suffers. Taxpayers suffer because they have to foot the welfare bill to support those who are out of work. Fiscally, that may be true, but the social factors are those which could be thought to have immediate impact on those who find themselves out of work. Many still face job discrimination in the workplace and in the professional world. This severely limits the amount of people, and types of people, who are able to obtain and hold a job for any length of time. Secondly, one has to consider that with the advent of greater technology came the downsizing. Predictably, people lost their jobs not because of discrimination, but because their jobs became obsolete and they quite possibly lacked seniority. This factor, alone, seems to ...
