certain group, or on behalf of the author. In Gabriel Garcia Marquezs One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Jose Donosos, Hell Has No Limits, the theme of social criticism is
very present. In both books it comes as an argument between conservatives and liberals, the banana republic as well as the treatment of the people of Macondo by the government.
The violence that was being experienced in Columbia during this time can be said to have had a great influence on Garcia Marquezs work. This can be said to be
a direct implication to the political unrest of the time and the overwhelming theme of isolationism that many villages practiced, in effect burying their heads in the sand hoping that
the violence wouldnt reach them. But of course it does. It can be said that a good deal of the violence and oppression in his novels is used as the
background and backdrop for the story to center around. The violence, itself, one could say, is typically politically based and manifested. What is also shown, one could say is that
this political cruelty that is shown nearly crushing his characters in every novel has the danger of becoming common place, and that in itself is symbolistic of how it is
for the Columbian people. Revolution, or the spirit of revolution seems to be an undercurrent in Garcia Marquezs books. What is also a great influence on a writer is
