The career in question happens to be sales manager at a car dealership. Before writing the paper, it would be a good
idea to have a thesis of some kind. One thing we might already know for example, is that salespeople of any kind tend to suffer from an image problem, although
it is uncertain why this is so (Butler, 1996). To add insult to injury, a 1995 Gallup poll revealed that most people believed that car sales was the least ethical
occupation among 26 careers (Butler, 1996). Probably for good reason - car salespeople suffer from the image of being loud-mouth, fast-taking wheeler-dealers who are only out for a fast buck.
But the truth is likely just the opposite - car sales people and sales managers work hard and ethically to provide customer satisfaction. From this, a thesis can be developed
to refute this information -- to demonstrate that car sales and management in that field is actually a very rewarding profession. The
next question then would be, where would one find information about a career in car sales management? One method we chose was to look at want-ads. While such
ads dont necessarily give much of an idea about the benefits of this career, most of them do list duties and necessary job skills. For example, one such ad we
found from a Canadian auto dealership advertised for a new car sales manager and required various duties (Phaeton Automotive Group 2003). Such duties included establishing department objectives and pursuing them
their planning, organizing and measuring performance; preparing and managing an annual budget for the new car sales department; complying with federal, provincial and local laws that would impact new-car sales;
