Smoking? Yes, we all have heard the statistics until they fail to mean anything to us anymore. However, when placed in a new perspective, such as in the role of a mass murderer, then the statistics take on new and terrifying proportions. Consider that nearly ninety percent of the all the lung cancers are caused by cigarette smoking, alone. When one considers that those are ninety deaths that need not have happened, the importance of stopping this destructive habit becomes paramount. However, if the altruistic persuasion doesnt convince you, then consider the bottom line. Smokers hit non-smokers in the wallet. How much has healthcare costs risen in the past few decades? Compare that to the rise in availability of cigarettes and the promotion of cigarettes to both the young as well as the old and the correlation is clear: non-smokers are paying the unfair tax burden for those who continue to pollute their bodies with legal toxins. Of course, this point may not matter to the addicted smoker. The cardiovascular system is affected by the nicotine in cigarette smoke which causes an increased heart rate and raised blood pressure and peripheral vascular resistance, consequently this "increases myocardial oxygen demand", meaning that the nicotine is actually removing and inhibiting some oxygen uptake by the body(American Lung Assoc.2003). Thus, it can be said that the carbon monoxide which is a by product of the cigarette also contributes its own set of complications, beyond those of irritated respiratory systems.
