and of the corporate businesses who do not have the common interest of the public as their goal. Michael Pertschuk, who has studied this ongoing struggle for many years has
written an insightful book which examines the leading causes, trends and gives predictions (often frightening ones) as to where certain missed opportunities may have opened the door for a continued
exploitation of Americas citizens. Pertschuk, though he speaks primarily about the activist movements against the large tobacco conglomerates, really asks deeper questions
which pertain to anyone who feels righteous indignation against the large corporate machinery in the US. Many people do not become involved in causes simply because they believe that their
voice, alone, will not count. Others believe that they lack the credibility or legitimacy to speak for a large segment of people. Still others want to be a part of
a movement but are not able to find a way in which to do so. Pertschuk not only takes no the tobacco
industry within the United States but examines and exposes the policies of tobacco industries worldwide. What was most evident is that even if the tobacco giants are chained, leashed and
kenneled, so to speak, in the US, these businesses have such an extensive network that they will not be hurt in any way by the US market slackening.
Pertschuk speaks about the missed opportunity of the global incentive and how as the golden arrow was handed to anti-tobacco advocates, the cause suffered
