Compiled by P. Giltman 6/2010 Please According to most scientists, most humans pass through five
stages of sleep and they are identified as Stage 1, 2, 3, 4 and REM sleep which stands for rapid eye movement. These stages are cyclical with each step taking
about 90 to 110 minutes (Sleepdex, 2010). When an individual first falls asleep, their REM sleeps are relatively short with longer periods of deep sleep. Later in the night, REM
intervals lengthen and deep sleep time subsequently decreases. Stage 1 is considered a very light sleep where often times the individual drifts in and out of being awake to being
asleep. In this stage, eye muscles become very heavy and overall body movement slows down. The individual takes longer breaths and their breathing becomes less frequent. During this stage, many
people experience sudden muscle contractions preceded by a sensation of falling. In Stage 2 sleep, eye movement ceases and brain activity slows down drastically with only occasional bursts. As the
individual progresses into stage 3 sleep, it can be very difficult to wake someone up. This is considered the first stage of deep sleep. The brain waves are a combination
of slow waves, known as delta waves, combined with faster waves. If someone is woken up during this stage, they may feel groggy and disoriented for several minutes. In Stage
4 sleep, the brain produces delta waves almost exclusively. There is no eye movement or muscle activity. This is when some children experience bedwetting, sleepwalking or night terrors. Both stages
