religion and science is, primarily, to distinguish between science and creationism: he sees no contradiction, for example, in the concept that scientists can also be theologians. For example, he dismisses flood geology, which seeks to prove conclusively that Noahs flood was a historical event and at the same time use the flood as proof that evolution is a false doctrine, by contrasting the approach of creationists and true scientists to the topic. True scientists, he asserts, not only avoid introducing miraculous events into their hypotheses, but are also capable of abandoning flawed theories in the light of new evidence. In Justice Scalias Misunderstanding, he points out that in their attempt to inject Genesis literalism into science classrooms (Gould, 1991, p455), the creationist lobby argued the topic from contradictory perspectives when challenged. In the first instance, they stated, for example, that Genesis literalism should not be regarded as religion: it was in fact a form of science which conventional scientists refused to recognise as a valid alternative due to their own short-sighted approach to the matter. However, when the opposing side made the point that creation science was merely dogma which could not be empirically tested, and therefore could not be classed as true science, the creationists shifted their ground. Instead of maintaining that creation science and conventional science were equally valid from a scientific point of view, they argued that in fact, both were equally religious.
