is positive or negative is often up to the individual and the choices they determine to make. In Maya Angelous essay, Sister Flowers, she speaks about who her hero was
as a young girl and why this woman held such a place of esteemed reverence in her heart and mind. Many have stated that Angelous character shows too much respect
and reverence for Sister Flowers, but when one examines the context of the reverence, one begins to see that hindsight, like memories, are often clouded with sentiment. Nonetheless, this does
not lessen the impact or the feelings of reverence that one has for those people whose presence has had a profound effect. Does Angelou overstate the reverence she has for
Sister Flowers? No. This is her story. These are her feelings. These are her memories. And, in the end, as usual, we are only precariously living through anothers perspective when
we pick up a book and read. Mrs. Bertha Powers is an elegant woman who has a love of poetry and literature.
In the small town of Black Stamps Mrs. Flowers makes it a point to read these poems to the narrator at Mrs. Flowers house, even though Mrs. Flowers came from
a very well to do family. She attempts to foster a love of beauty and words to the narrator. In order to do this she encourages the girl to memorize
various passages. "Take this book of poems and memorize one for me. Next time you pay me a visit, I want you to recite"(Wyrick/Angelou 142).
