there was a disappointment in the accomplishments. David Bushnell chronicles the life of this extraordinary man of the people in his book, Simon Bolivar, Liberation and Disappointment. Bolivar never
knew the poverty and harsh reality of hunger as a young man. He was born into a wealthy family, Bushnell writes, and inherited a fortune. However, he was no stranger
to tragedy. The same money which he inherited, he did so due to his parents death when he was still a small boy. When he was of age he traveled
widely in Europe, saturating himself with the best from various cultures. When he arrived home Bushnell suggests that he arrived with a new perspective on how a country should be
run and a new vision for South America. Shortly after his return he joined some freedom fighters who managed to invade and take over Caracas. It would only be
a short time before Venezuela (his birthplace) would be granted its independence from Spain. However, Spain was persistent and continued to war over the country. Running low on funds he
attempted to amass funds from abroad, but could not gain any footing. When he returned it became obvious that he would have to leave the country or he would be
killed. He fled to Jamaica, then later to Haiti where he was able to gather together enough rebel fighters to mount another attack on Spain in Venezuela. This time he
won. Bushnell pauses after these opening chapters to speak about what could have happened, or what certain other personalities would have done in this situation. What did happen, however,
was that Bolivar was so angered by the Spanish occupation of South America that it no longer satisfied him to have them out of Venezuela. He wanted them gone from
