and from work, its a common sight to see these very religious, bearded men davening (praying) on the bus commute. The prayers are religious to the point where some of
the buses, owned by Hasidic companies, actually have hooks and tracks to hang the mehizah, a curtain that typically separates men and women from one another during prayer.
But what happens when the bus company is a privately owned one, but subsidized by the government? The company is sued, the ACLU gets
into the act, and the case ends up garnering national and international attention. This is what happened to Sima Rabinovicz, a secular
Jew of Russian descent when one day, during December 1993, she was asked by a group of Hasidic men to move from her seat on a bus owned and operated
by Monsey Trails, which operated between Rockland County and Manhattan (Berger, 1995). The Jews wanted to wall off a section of the
bus for afternoon prayer (Berger, 1995). Putting up a wall between men and women among the Orthodox and Hasidism is meant to minimize distractions during prayer (Berger, 1995). Rabinovicz refused
to shift seats to accommodate them, noting she was a regular commuter on the bus and she had has much right to stay where she was as anyone else (Berger,
1995). As a result, the men walked off the bus and performed their prayers on the sidewalk (Berger, 1995). Though this, on
