However, it goes without saying that the creation of great works of art are not there for he sake of beauty only. Most of the worlds greatest pieces of art, whether that be a painting, a poem, or a work of literature, feed mans soul and in doing so, often provide insight to that greatest of questions: Why? Herman Melvilles works, for example, aptly portray the reason that literature should and must be studied on all levels of a students educational journey. Herman Melvilles short stories offer college literature classes, for example, a great deal of insight into the human condition, and allows them to take those truths one step further in contemplating their own decisions. A good short story for this is Melvilles The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids. The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids aptly illustrates what can happen when one gives oneself over to self gratification at the expense of other things. The industrial class depicted in the first part of the story example this lifestyle, and in the end are shown to have empty, meaningless lives. "It was the very perfection of quiet absorption of good living, good drinking, good feeling and good talk" (Melville 2443). But whats wrong with that, the average student might state.
