and poet, there were very few role models for him growing up. So, as he likes to joke, he made them up. Those characters come to life in his poetry
and his novels. An incredibly prolific writer, Sherman Alexie has made a name for himself and, more than that, is offering Native American boys that role model that he never
had. When one first meets Alexie one is struck by how dark and deep-set his eyes are, as if he has been there and done
that and experienced the pain of the journey to get there. It is this type of angst and frustration against the system that comes through in his poetry. As a
young man growing up in Seattle, he often had to scrounge his pennies together to be able to buy a sandwich at the local convenient store as a kid. Now,
the same people line up by the hundreds when he gives a reading at the local library. Susan Berry Brill de Ramirez says of
Alexies poetry that "the poems and stories are told with engaging strategies of oral storytelling traditions, including the humor and epigrammatic statements that sum up centuries of struggle." Very conscious
of community and what he can give back to the community, Sherman often can be found in the oddest venues. Sometimes he will turn down black tie affairs in order
to make an appearance at a local high schools fundraising event. A big fan of the late Kurt Cobain, often that bucking the system comes through in his personality and
