all, one of the movies in which Holmes was not a major factor until about one-third into the movie. It was also the last in this particular series -- starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. But like many of the other Sherlock Holmes movies, this one presented a particular problem, suggested a hypothesis, than relied on a series of leaps of intuition to solve this particular issue. Though this particular movie relied on huge jumps of intuition rather than the cunning, small leaps that tend to be more along the lines of a typical Sherlock Holmes movie, this represents a good case study for the problem, the hypothesis, the test, and the solution. The movie starts out - appropriately enough, in prison; in which an inmate there is making special music boxes. But these boxes do more than play music -- they actually contain messages. Secret messages for the friends of the inmate. The idea of this inmate is that when he smuggles the music boxes out of jail, hoping someone will figure out the clues to the mystery. The "mystery" in this case, is that the inmate was involved in currency plates and counterfeiting, with the messages in the music box containing the whereabouts of the missing plates. Though the inmate was in prison, serving time for stealing the plate, his friends were certainly capable of finding the plates and continuing the business. However, the plan backfires, the boxes end up at an auction instead, and are purchased by three people, with Watsons friend Stinky (aka Julian Emory) being among the group.
