author took license in portraying the message of the book. In the end of Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree, Tariq Ali establishes a relationship between the Reconquista and the conquest
of America. One wonders to what extent this was a legitimate observation. The novel is set in Spain soon after the fall of Granada. Told through the eyes of
Banu Hudayl, a fairly wealthy family, Alis book shows the dilemma that Muslims found themselves in and the decision that they would possibly come to regret. One of the most
telling scenes is the burning of the books at the hand of the Spanish Crown. The works of centuries were destroyed in one afternoon, adding some foreshadowing to the fact
that more lay in store for the Muslim community. In order to determine if Ali has used his historical framework correctly, a brief overview of the Reconquista and why it
is significant is necessary. The Reconquista was a determination of Christians to recapture and convert Spain from Muslim influence. The decadence in Spain began in the 11th century, and the
Nobel Arab families were at variance among themselves. During this time the Christian kingdom in the north of the Spain started the fight, which is commonly known as the reconquest
or Reconquista. The Reconquista culminated in the taking and sacking of Granada. This would lead into the Spanish Inquisition. What is particularly captivating about this work is that it
shows the Inquisition from the other side. One is put in the place of those who are being invaded, the change in culture which is forced upon them and the
resistance to that change. It is true that in any account there are more than one side to it. Ali makes this painfully true in his account. However, one
