Robert Beverly, Ebenezer Cooke, were situated around the hearth one evening. Seemingly engrossed in a debate over the Indian problems in their territories, and life in general, each man, it was obvious, was a firm believer in his own opinions. John Smith took another tug on his pipe, then sat back in the chair, as if exasperated with the statement about the Indian situation by Cooke. When he opened his mouth to speak, it was accompanied by a large puff of tobacco smoke. "So what you are saying, Mr. Cooke, is that all leaders are corrupt?" Smith gestured with the tip of his pipe toward Cookes smiling face. "And if you think this, then it begs the question, then, doesnt it? Why the hell are you here?" "Oh, come, come, John, dont take things so seriously. The Sot Weed Factor was only written in fun." "Didnt read that way to me." "Well, I have to admit, I was a bit sore when the Quaker absconded with all my purchases. That did irritate me. But, for all its vices, this country does have good food."
