the past, times were simpler, and people more modest about what went on behind bedroom doors. During the late 19th century, especially, it was believed that modesty and prudence were
the virtues by which American society lived. Across the ocean, Queen Victoria reigned in England, and Victorian society was regarded as quite staid and proper.
In reality, none of this was true. Beneath the lowered eyelids and apparent modesty lay a United States that was filled with lust that was, for the
most part, unchecked. Though women wore long dresses and men dressed with many layers, it didnt stop many an unchecked coupling. Dont forget, this was the time during which brothels
were rampant (as well as prostitution -- much of it, in fact, legal, especially in the Western United States.). This was also the time of the "great divide" between the

the police worked to regulate them, rather than eliminate them (Adler 737). Interesting enough, in antebellum St. Louis, prostitutes working in well-run and discreet brothels were rarely arrested, unless they
took their activities outside of the "low" entertainment district (Adler 737). Public officials and police drew the line, however, at streetwalkers (Adler
738). The belief was that these streetwalkers, unlike the brothel prostitutes, might "corrupt the innocent, introduce immorality into middle-class neighborhoods or violate racial taboos" (Adler 737). So, it seemed that
one class of prostitute was okay, while another was strictly verboten. "Out of sight, out of mind" seemed to be the thought of the times.
