ways in which to express themselves that did not incur censure. Mary Wortley Montagu wrote satirical poems as well as letters about the relationships between men and women which seems
to have been well received in her day. Who is Mary Wortley Montagu? Mary Wortley Montagu was quite the character. Born in 1689 she was raised primarily
by her father after her mothers death. This offered Mary the education that she might not have known had her mother lived. As a result Mary was as educated as
any man and became as opinionated. Since her father was a wealthy man and part of the upper crust of society Mary would have the freedom to move amongst the
movers and shakers of her day. She would later marry well, but not wisely. After she and her husband parted ways she would be so well off as to
be able to do as many women were not able to do: live independently. She lived abroad for a great many years. Her worldliness and sense of decency seems to
have reached beyond artistic and literary circles to extend toward human rights causes, namely that of health and inoculation against small pox. Her works were said to sparkle with
her personality and energy. Her perspectives were unique due to her upbringing and her many travels. The worldview that she managed to bring to women of her day and age
were valued for their insight and their direction to women who often found themselves locked into lives that were pale in comparison to Marys. Themes
