some cases). Research, however, proves that older people can benefit, and even need, services in addition to housing and food. One recent
study conducted in the UK, for example, showed that senior service users following a hospital discharge relied on a support system of friendship and interpersonal relationships, as well as participation
in recreational programs to fully regain their physical and emotional health (McLeod, 2008). The difficulty with many nursing homes and dependent living
situations is there isnt much for the residents to do. The basics were being provided, but the quality when it came to increasing non-essential needs (such as continuing education, recreation
and social outlets) was non-existent (Kirkevold, 2008). Whats changing the situation is - of course - the ageing of baby boomers.
As this sector of the population grows older and enters independent living and skilled nursing facilities, it wants more than simply housekeeping, nursing and the occasional shuffleboard game (Clancy, 2002).
An interview conducted in 2006 with John P. Stewart, executive director with the Baltimore Commission on Aging and Retirement Education yielded the information that baby boomers arent interested in being
"cooped up in institutions, isolated in golf course communities" (Nursing Homes, 2006, p. 22). Stewarts idea, the blueprint for designing what
