The Twilight series was one of only a few books that the young teen deigned to pick up and read; he and his friends (male and female) were enthusiastic about
it. When the mother approached the principal about the issue, via e-mail, the principal felt that things were getting out of bounds,
with students pretending they were Twilight characters and quoting from the book when they should have been concentrating in class. Though the mother agreed with the principal in some regards,
she had her doubts. "Isnt it good when a book gets these kids fired up?" she asked her husband later. "Isnt it better that they actually read and act out,
then not wanting to read at all?" The mothers question echoes those asked by parents and educators about "series" books. The Twilight series
is just the latest incarnation. During the 1990s and early 2000s, it was the Harry Potter series that was the culprit of battles between parents and teachers. Previous to that,
"Lord of the Rings" had schools and parents (and even parents and parents) squaring off at times. One side of the issue
says any kind of reading is good reading, and unless the books being read are immoral or harmful to the teenager, its a good thing. The other side of the
coin says that teens read little enough as it is, so why fill their brains with garbage? Why not introduce them to the true literary classics like Dickens?
But in this paper, we have to agree with the mother. It sends a poor message to a teen to ban his or her reading
