things changed. Employees were no longer "cogs" but "human resources." The questions today arent necessarily "how much work can I get out of my employees," as much as they are
"how can I motivate my employees so they can do the best jobs they can, and in doing so, generate loyalty and appreciation to my company?" The latter question is
trickier to answer -- but if done properly, employee motivation goes a long way toward productivity increase, no matter the industry. Even in a service industry such as the transportation
industry, motivation leads to happier employees and overall better customer service (i.e., fewer complaints to transit authorities or transportation companies). Such motivation also helps recruiting efforts -- potential employees are
more likely to be attracted to companies who are into meeting employees needs than those who are not (Kruglak, 2000). In
fact, according to most experts, the first step in determining both an employee motivation program and a self-help motivation program is to determine needs that have to be met (Kruglak,
2000). Experts note that employee needs related to motivation include equal pay and fair treatment on the job; job security; technical and
