and practice. The student may wish to pinpoint the exact area of communication where the confidence breaks down. For example, does the student feel less confident speaking in groups
larger than one or two, or does the student lack the confidence to start up a conversation at all? Self confidence is a skill that is learned throughout time. No
one is born with self-confidence or a high level of self-esteem. One of the ways that one can achieve this goal of a higher self-esteem and elevated self-confidence is through
observation. Children learn by mimicking behaviors that they perceive to be favorable and pleasing to their caregivers. By imitating these behaviors, children meet with success and gain confidence in their
ability to elicit the same desired response each time. For the adult trying to overcome shyness, choosing an individual who espouses characteristics that one would like to have can
serve the same purpose. On the other hand, one can also learn from those who offer a bad examples, as well. Perhaps there is someone in the students sphere of
influence who is always at the center of a very lively conversation and who offers a good example. The student could observe the body language, the choice of clothing, the
hairstyle, the nuance and tone of voice that is used by this individual. Does he or she commandeer the entire conversation or do they allow others to offer their opinions?
