a use for the server, were going to assume that the server is being used to help an office keep better track of its employees and payroll. In this paper,
well review some of the servers available, approximate types, and based on the needs of the user (i.e., the office and office staff), will select a particular database management system.
The two main servers tossed around when it comes to managing data are Oracle versus Microsofts SQL server. But experts in the field
point out that making a decision depends on several things. First, what you have (Talley and Mitchell, 2000; see also Harney, 2007). Second, the specific needs of the organization. Finally,
who will be operating the particular server (Harney, 2007). There are few things worse than putting in a database management system that no one knows how to use.
Talley and Mitchell (2000) point out that SQL can be difficult to use, and requires an experienced object-oriented programmer and/or some training to use. The
two point out, however, that the SQL comes with several bells and whistles -- they point out that Visual Studio, Visual Basic, Visual C++ and Visual InterDev are bungled together
for $1,619 (Talley and Mitchell, 2000). But another difficulty with SQL is that the cost of the server can run the office anywhere from $1,999 to $3,999 (Talley and Mitchell,
2000). Still, both point out that this package is less expensive than Oracle (Talley and Mitchell, 2000). Oracle prices start at $6,767, depending
on the platform, and include bells and whistles including the application server, iWorkplace Templates -- plus the suite runs on more platforms than Microsofts SQL (Talley and Mitchell, 2000). Talley
