From the start, the Segway was geared toward the walker - to operate in areas wherever people would walk, indoors and out (Walker, 2002). But
even with the goal in mind, there were questions about whether the Segway was to be used to replace an auto - or to replace a car (Walker, 2002).
Inventor Dean Kamen unveiled the product with great fanfare as a "human Transporter," with predictions that the product would become huge (Economist, 2004).
But problems impact the product from the start including a voluntary recall of products in 2003 to repair a problem that caused riders to fall off when the machines batteries
ran low (Economist, 2004). At that time, a grand total of 6,000 of the devices had been sold, for $4,500 each - with the largest use on the commercial side
(Amazon.com was a huge supporter) (Economist, 2004). In more recent years, Segways have been used for security reasons, among safety patrol departments and even at the John Wayne Airport (Government
Product News, 2007). The question we ask here is, has the pricing of Segways helped or hurt their cause? Would lowering the
