a hot-button issue as it is in the area of data security. Anyone who is anyone cringes when he/she hears a story about some computer breach in some credit card company, resulting in potential data loss and identity theft. Put more security barriers in place, the people cry. But security is an iffy proposition. Miller (2005) points out that while the intuitive purpose of computer security is to keep bad things out and keep good things in, this isnt reality. While keeping all of the bad out is lovely in theory (and more and more firewalls cant really do it, so long as a hacker is determined to break in) when it comes to reality, Miller points out that cooperation is necessary for this to happen. Complete safety is achievable when no cooperation is needed (Miller, 2005). But in a commerce situation, customers often need to cooperate safely with those they may not be able to trust (Miller, 2005). Furthermore, many of the transactions take place when theres little, if any, human awareness (Miller, 2005). Humans are only brought into the system when problems take place. Millers contention, however, is that total prevention provides safety all right, by making danger impossible (Miller, 2005). Problem is, it also makes any real commerce or anything else impossible too (Miller, 2005). Moving on to other potential systems, Miller suggests a better system, he points out, is deterrence, in other words, trying to discourage any kind of attack by ensuring it isnt in anyones best interest to attack (Miller, 2005). But deterrence still has its problems - the intentions could be innocent, with overreaction the result (Miller, 2005). ...
