Inc. In addition to the fact that Amazon is a "pure-play" business (i.e., 100% of its sales and marketing are online), there are internal IT issues, such as payroll, human
resources and other things, that would need to be addressed. As there is little literature that identifies specific security areas that Amazon.com is dealing with, well look at the general
literature and discuss how it applies specifically to Amazon. Externally, on the e-commerce side, Amazon relies on an SSL encryption to protect its
customers when they leave credit card or other sensitive information. Furthermore, Amazon.com "mines" consumer data to help target things like "suggestions" to consumers when they log onto the site (Johnson,
2007). However, Johnson and others warn that while customers are willing to "readily share all kinds of information when they see firms using data to enhance their experiences" (p. 96)
such information sharing can become problematic if one of three common pitfalls is involved. They are: asking for data then not using it for the customers benefit; failing to protect
data security and the customer perception that data was used to harm them by leaving them open to unwanted solicitations (Johnson, 2007). The
issue with Amazon.com is that it doesnt sell names or other information, but uses it strictly for consumers. The problem here, however, is Amazons third-party partners. No doubt these partners
are asked to sign an agreement stating they wont sell the data. But is this type of thing enforced? It would be all too easy for one of these third-party
vendors to slip a few thousand names to another partner, and suddenly that information the customer thought was private isnt quite so private any more. This is an area that
