occurred - in other words, the fact that people in different parts of the growing United States performed in different ways. For example, farming practices differed from location to location. The theory here is that as sectionalist sentiment grew, this ended up tearing the Union apart and leading to the War Between the States, also known as the Civil War. Much of the literature we found supports this assertion, although most people tend to put the main basis of the Civil War down to the issues of slavery and states rights. But had the states and regions not differed so much from one another, perhaps war of that magnitude might not have occurred. According to Turner, sectionalism seems to be a huge part of the history of the United States, but it isnt exactly outlined specifically by historians (Turner, 2002). Turner points out that "sectionalism" doesnt necessarily refer to the North and South struggles during the War Between the States, but rather, the geographic provinces in which "a special society has developed, with an economic, political and social life of its own" (Turner, 2002). These provinces, he continued, developed their own leaders - similar to the nation-states of Europe (plus he points out that the U.S. is actually comparable in area to Europe) (Turner, 2002). Because of the vastness and sectionalism, he notes, the true federal aspect of the nation is less the idea of relations between the nation and states, and more with the relation of sections and the nation (Turner, 2002).
