on the software development side; Kay (2002) points out that information systems have gotten so huge and complicated, requiring a lot of manpower to operate, that an SDLC process helps get everyone on the same page and (more or less) on the same schedule. The basics of an SDLC model involve focusing on a project from its initial feasibility study through the completed application (Systems Development Life Cycle, 2010). The waterfall method is the one that is most common, and its phases include feasibility (determining if the project should go ahead); requirement analysis/design (understanding system requirements and designing and developing the project); implementation (translating designs into code); testing (speaks for itself; though if errors are found during the testing phase, the process might be bumped back to the design phase) and operation/maintenance, which has the system going on line and being maintained (Systems Development Life Cycle, 2010). Kay discusses the "waterfall" method, and is somewhat contemptuous of it, explaining that its great for automation activities, but doesnt work too well when it comes to building systems for knowledge workers, in other words people at help desks or people trying to solve problems (2002). Given that the IRS situation to which were attempting to develop an SDLC model involves extension of training, the waterfall method might be somewhat limiting. Kays belief is that the fountain method (in which there is overlap between the phases) and the spiral model (which involves a series of shorter waterfall phases) might be best for SDLC projects that arent automated and that involve knowledge workers or other "human" endeavors. This would certainly be the case with the IRS; the question were trying to answer here is how to develop a ...
