that comes in a variety of different forms. The overall industry for this product is the consumer products industry, segmented even further into cleaning products (or household cleaning products). Therefore, while the sector is consumer goods, the industry would be household cleaning products (Yahoo, 2009). Who are the major companies in this industry? In addition to SC Johnson, there are Clorox, Ecolab (which attempts to manufacture "green" cleaning products," and Church & Dwight Co. (which manufactures the Arm & Hammer brand of products). SC Johnson is about as close to pure competition as any industry can get (though there really is no such thing as "pure" competition). There is no monopoly, because price is not necessarily controlled by one firm (or a group of firms). This industry does, however, lend itself to price takers, assuming there is a strong enough, and unique enough, product that can be offered to the market. The bulk of the products in this particular industry are in their mature phase - meaning theyve been around for awhile, and its kind of tough to improve them. In terms of exit and entry barriers, both are pretty loose. Almost anyone can put together a bunch of ingredients to make a cleanser (they used to use sand to clean bowls, before soap was invented). But where the manufacture gets tricky is through mass production. This requires a lot of capital expenditure into plants and equipment (not to mention labor).
