such as Kant and Hegler, both of whom believed that people were driven by an "other" to do certain deeds. However, in analyzing Schopenhauers ethics, and applying some to todays
events, it is possible to see that the philosopher with the dismal views may have been right. Its probably not surprising that
Schopenhauer offered up a depressing code of ethics and philosophy. In the times in which Schopenhauer lived, the world was experiencing war, disasters and unrest because of the French Revolution,
Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna (Davidson 84). In the wake of the Napoleanic era came a great wave of despair, cynicism and disillusionment (Davidson 84). And it was into
this wake that Schopenhauer came of age (Davidson 84). It is not surprising that Schopenhauer embraced the concept of pessimism - in an era in which every man seemed to
be out for himself, regardless of the suffering of others, it was difficult to be positive about the events that were taking place (Davidson 84).
Schopenhauer was, above all, a realist, and he spent much of his life battling the views of one of his favorite philosophers the metaphysical Immanuel Kant, who
held the belief that morality was performed because of the will of an "other," rather than driven by the beast within (The Philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer). Kants belief was that
humans act - and react - based on prior experience, rather than acting on knowledge of an act itself (The Philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer). Schopenhauer, however, took this one step
further, noting that it is possible to pass beyond experience to know the action for itself - our will, therefore, is our reality (The Philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer).
