Management and its methods might seem fairly straightforward on the surface. However, throughout much of the 20th century, a variety of schools and theories cropped up about what the
"best" way of management might be. Its interesting to trace these theories, based on the cultures in which they evolved. For example, the
classical model of management is the best known, and probably among the oldest types of management theories. Also known as the "autocratic" model of management, the style recognizes that there
is one decision-maker - the boss - and no room for employee comments or criticisms. This style of management can be traced back to military groups (and even todays military),
in that disagreement with a direct order from on high can end up being fatal to others. Furthermore, this model reaches far back into a feudal society, in which a
landowner had absolute authority over his land and the people who farmed the land. Even in this day and age, the classical model
is still employed - but there are several problems with this model, one of which is that employees arent going to necessarily sit still and be ordered about by an
authoritarian boss. The boss who believes employees are willing to take orders that are barked at them is a boss who wont have many employees for long.
