need to be better educated than ever. The issue, however, also concerns an increase in students who have limited proficiency in English, which is creating different challenges in the classroom.
In this paper, well analyze three scholarly articles concerning this topic. There are hundreds of articles concerning the topic of English language learners
(ELL). An interesting issue that Brooks and Thurston (2010) focus on concerns how ELL (Hispanic) students conduct academic tasks in different instructional grouping configurations in urban middle schools. The groupings
studied by Brooks and Thurston focused on whole classrooms, small groups, one-to-one learning and individual instruction. Why was this study important? As
mentioned above, the United States is becoming an increasingly diverse society, with immigrants and others of different cultures entering the school system in record numbers. As Brooks and Thurston point
out, closing the achievement gap between non-English learners and their English-learner counterparts is important. The authors point out that while ELL students become quite proficient on the social side of
English language, when it comes to the more formal language of academics, they struggle. Previous research pointed out that more collaborative, personalized
instruction tended to help ELL students, and Brooks and Thurstons results werent much different. Basically, throwing ELL students into a whole class situation (better known as trial by fire) isnt
effective; it simply leads to a great deal of struggle and frustration on the students parts. Small groups and one-to-one instruction were the most effective, the researchers noted. A surprise
with this study was that individual instruction wasnt very effective - its assumed that an instructor-learner relationship would be helpful. But that wasnt the case in this particular study.
