is given to that stated doctrine. Origins Linking itself to the times of the Protestant Reformation, Baptists first appeared in the New World in 1639 through the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Their own religious colony later appeared in Rhode Island. In 1682, William Screven moved the Baptist church into Maine. This church is important, according to Cowan (2000)
