million residents reside on approximately 46 square miles of land located between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Because of its
historical aspects (it was one of the cities that sprang up in the wake of the Gold Rush in California), San Franciscans are proud of their heritage, meaning theyre more
likely to keep their older buildings standing, than to tear them down for newer ones. This has led to a city with some unique architecture in terms of buildings that
