several offices in the United States. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a wide-area network, or WAN, to connect these offices. While the headquarters is in Atlanta, there are also offices in Chicago, Phoenix and New York, as well as the China plant. Weekly meetings take place in the corporate conference room at headquarters, with people attending from multiple locations. What, exactly, is a WAN? In its most basic form, a WAN is a data communications network that covers a large geographic area (Cisco, 2008). The WAN typically uses transmission facilities through common carriers such as telephone companies (Cisco, 2008). Most WANs operate via point-to-point links, which provides a path from the customer premises through a carrier network, to a remote network (Cisco, 2008). Point-to-point lines are typically leased, and are called leased lines (Cisco, 2008). Circuit switching, meanwhile, lets data connections be initiated when needed, then terminated when communication is complete (Cisco, 2008). Another option to consider in this regard are wireless networks - unlike the leased lines or wired networks, wireless networks mean users can access information from remote locations (or even videoconference from a remote location) (Siegel et al, 2004). With wireless networks, data are sent over radio waves (Siegel et al, 2004). But to set something like this up, wed require a series of wireless LANs that would link together over a standard Ethernet network (Siegel et al, 2004). Other equipment we may want to consider for are WAN include virtual circuits, dialup services, switches and devices (Cisco, 2008). More recently, high latency WAN circuits have been useful for accelerated transfers and smaller file sizes - not to mention speeding up pass-through and TCP transfers (Verrall et al, 2006). This would be an ideal type of set-up for our particular WAN, ...
