historical events, certain introductions necessarily (but not always) precede the contents of the work. If such an introduction were to be included with this work, it might contain such issues
as ethic conflict, identity confusion and the impact of urbanization on all the people living in the Southwest during this time. Abran Gonzalez is going places. He just knows
it. But his dreams of grandeur are interrupted as his world slowly spins out of control with the death of his estranged mother. A deathbed confession leaves Abran reeling as
he must confront and construct a new identity for himself. His search becomes the basis for Anayas deeper issues and themes which incorporate the greed of big business, politicians and
racists. Abrans battle becomes symbolic, it would seem, of the Southwests struggle for identity and its attempt to recover some of its soul. As Abran battles for the future of
his town, he also must look into its past. When he does so, both he and those living there begin to understand just how high the stakes have been raised.
One of the foremost scholars on the Southwest, Charles Wilkinson, has written a book entitled, The Crossing of the Meridian. The very issues which Abran faces, that of the disappearing
and damaged environment and the ridiculous and stubborn adherence to outdated and dangerous harvesting of natural resources, are corroborated by Wilkinsons work in this area. In the writing of this
