Life as it was known in the past decades is accentuated by this author who provides a look at how women have evolved over time. And while many books have been written on this very subject, this author shines as her interest comes through loud and clear. Ryan (1985) makes small observations and includes interesting facts to keep this historical subject quite intriguing. In part, the ease of reading is attributable to her superb writing style that is also down to Earth. Ryan does not rely on jargon. Rather, she provides a well written volume that, while opinionated to an extent, provides a great deal of facts about an important era in womens studies. Ryan (1985) highlights the fact that some women were not simply compliant. They were leaders and go-getters. Harriet Beecher Stowe is mentioned along with many others. For example, one outspoken woman by the name of Lydia Child remarks: "If I were his wife, Id sue for divorce and take it if I couldnt get it by petitioning" (qtd. in Ryan, 1985, p. 137). This quote signifies the power of women but also demonstrates the oppression they must have felt. Child makes a bold statement and Ryan sees fit to include it in her work. Ryan (1985) adds in the context of Childs statement: "This kind of political response not only identified the anti-slavery cause with the actions of a popular literary figure but also translated politics into a domestic conflict" (p. 137). The author certainly conveys a point of view but also relays a great deal of factual information that is quite useful. Yet, there has been some criticism lodged about the author as a historian.
