has undergone many interesting changes. From an outsiders perspective, it would seem as if the economic situation were experiencing unqualified successes, as the number of "wealthy" individuals has been seen
to steadily increase over the last decade (Gustafsson & Nivorozhkina, 2005). However, the societal distribution of that increased wealth has not matched the progress seen in other areas of the
Russian economy; in fact, Russia is presently situated as one of the most social unequal countries in the world, especially in terms of the distribution of wealth (Gustafsson & Nivorozhkina,
2005). This disparity is perhaps best illuminated by looking at those individuals who boast the most wealth, and seeing how they represent the "new wealthy" in demographical terms. To
achieve this, the periodic lists of billionaires printed in Forbes can be analyzed for recent trends. In 2006, a significant number of Russian billionaires were added to the list of
the worlds billionaires, more than from any other country (Volkov, 2006). This had the additional effect of increasing the average net worth of the Russian billionaire from 91 billion dollars
to 172 billion dollars (Volkov, 2006). Several key figures within the Russian economy have almost become spokespersons for these alarming growth rates, such as Roman Abramovich, whose worth grew by
five billion dollars in a single year, or Lukoil Alekpreov, whose staggering entrepreneurial profile is intimately tied to his former position as the deputy ministry of Russias oil trade (previously
