to handle not only the production of nuclear energy, but to partner with the United States in commercially dealing with spent nuclear waste. Touted as a method to curtain
the development of nuclear weapons in Iran, in actuality, Russia appears to have realized the economic benefits of becoming a nuclear waster depository, while new technology is developed to reprocess
spent nuclear fuel. The debate is ongoing. NUCLEAR ENERGY AND WASTER CONTAINMENT PREVIOUSLY IN RUSSIA The Chernobyl nuclear accident which took place on April 26, 1986 was caused by
a flawed nuclear reactor design and the fact that the reactor was being operated with inadequately trained personnel and without the correct degree of safety ("Chernobyl Accident"). As a
result of this nuclear accident, the explosion of steam and fire sent at least five percent of the core of the radioactive reactor into the atmosphere where it traveled downwind
("Chernobyl Accident"). When the fatality count was last taken at the end of 2004, a total of fifty-six individuals had died as a direct result of the fallout -
twenty-eight people died within four months from radiation or thermal burns, nineteen have since died, approximately nine more deaths occurred from thyroid cancer ("Chernobyl Accident"). The fallout continues -
not the actual fallout of radiation, but the history of this incident and its affect on the credibility of the former Soviet Union, now known as Russias ability to handle
