weighed in as the main causes of the Russian Revolution of 1917, there is no doubt that the three most important considerations were 1 The horrible poverty that existed in
Russia at that time; 2 Marxist philosophy permeating the political atmosphere; 3 The incredible persuasive ideology of the leader of the Bolsheviks, Vladimir Lenin. Russia, for centuries, has been a
society with a very wealthy upper class and a large number of poor peasants, mostly illiterate. Also, the head of Russia, known as the Tsar (from the Russian word for
Caesar), was believed to have absolute power, and even represented "God on earth". This attitude made it almost impossible to criticize the government and effect social changes where a more
equal society could develop. Now, the poor have always been present, in every society, and many different political philosophies were developed to try and adequately address this problem. One solution
was proposed by the German philosopher and economist, Karl Marx. Marx believed that the wealthy will never voluntarily give up some of their money to significantly help the poor in
any meaningful way, so what is needed was a violent revolution by the poor (and working class) to overthrow the government. He, with his co-writer and theorist, Friedrich Engels,
wrote in the late 1800s "The Communist Manifesto." Just a few expressions from their text will give the reader an understanding of their philosophy. "Workers of the world unite,
