Russia and Georgia have recently hit the news with fighting and turmoil, demonstrating that years of complacency did nothing to truly alleviate the troubles between them. The following paper examines the reasons behind the current conflict between Russia and Georgia. Russia and Georgia The region of Georgia that is of concern, and the region of Georgia that is involved in the fighting, is known as South Ossetia. It is possessed of "a distinct ethnic group, speaking a language distantly related to Farsi" (Amnesty International, 2008). Interestingly enough, there is also a North Ossetia which is located in Russia (Amnesty International, 2008). Throughout the Soviet era South Ossetia remained as "an autonomous province of Georgia" and then they "declared independence from Georgia in 1990 and armed conflict between South Ossetian and Georgian forces ensued in 1991 and 1992" (Amnesty International, 2008). It was termed a civil war by some and it came to an end, but still obviously smoldered beneath the surface. With the end of this struggle came the arrival of Russian peacekeepers Still South Ossetia remained an independent state, although not necessarily "recognized by any other state" (Amnesty International, 2008). Another region involved is Abkhazia and apparently, with the peacekeeping elements in place, there has also been Russias support of rebels in both South Ossetia and Abkhazia (Strategy Page, 2008). It appears as though, in Abkhazia, "Russia has troops operating as a peacekeeping force mandated by the Commonwealth of Independent States" as a way of enforcing the cease fire that was put in place in the 90s (Amnesty International, 2008).
