ways we note that many professionals are looking to drugs as the quick cure for the problem, while others argue that drugs are only clouding the problem and more research
must be done in order for the problems to be better understood and thus dealt with. It is a highly complex and controversial research subject. One of the most known
figures on the subject is Russell Barkley. He is one of the few professionals who seemed to come out and say that attention disorders need more research and a better
understanding. The following paper examines his contributions to the study of ADHD, or attention disorders, with some emphasis on adolescent individuals. Russell Barkley According to Barkley, categorizing ADHD as
an attention disorder actually simplifies and also trivializes the problem because it is not an attention deficit, according to Barkley (Diaz, 2003). According to Diaz (2003) "Barkley is working on
a new theory to explain the psychobiology beneath the spectrum of symptoms usually considered to be part of the ADD syndrome." Interestingly enough, one of the profound contributions by Barkley
is in noting that the symptoms associated with ADHD are symptoms that all people experience at one time or another in their life, and that the power of ADHD is
that the individual suffers constantly, since childhood, and that the symptoms continue throughout life and are quite severe in many cases (Diaz, 2003). This clearly applies to adolescents who
are going through many different stages of growth that are difficult enough without the added problem of a disorder that makes living itself difficult at times. What Barkley has done,
in presenting such ideas and perspectives is given the people, primarily parents and teachers, the ability to see more to the problem than is normally provided in the health industry.
