Enterprises Inc. By - properly! Salman Rushdie creates interest in his novel, Haroun
and the Sea of Stories, by creating a fascinating cast of characters, placing them in a fantastical world, and giving Haroun and his father an important mission that must be
accomplished in order for their lives to return to normal. This is very important since Harouns family constitutes the only people who manage to have happy lives in the "sad
city, the saddest of cities, a city so ruinously sad that it had forgotten its name" (Rushdie 15). Haroun is the only child of Rashid Khalifa, a storyteller who is
known for his cheerfulness. His mother, Soraya, is also typically happy, which is an emotion she expresses through song. However, complications ensue as Rushdie contrasts people with imagination, such
as Rashid, with those who lack this quality, such as their neighbor, Mr. Sengupta, who thinks Rashids stories are useless and asks, "Whats the use of stories that arent even
true?" (Rushdie 20). This is a crucial question, as it is being asked this question that depresses Rashid, robbing him of his imagination, and diminishing his ability to fascinate crowds
and sway them towards supporting a particular politician. Rashid also becomes depressed because his marriage is deteriorating, but the question delivers the crucial blow. Hired to campaign for a corrupt
politician, Snooty Buttoo, Rashid fails miserably and Buttoos henchmen indicate that Rashids performance before Buttoos constituents in the Valley of K had better be up to his old standards.
