looking for rural housing are likely to find that they have a lot of trouble finding something that is affordable and in good condition. A survey of Illinois seniors in
rural areas revealed that seventy percent of them own their own homes, and of those homes, 20% are "at least 73 years old" (Adler, 2004). However, any advantage of home
ownership in these cases is often cancelled out by the fact that the homes are in poor repair (Adler, 2004). Some were even unsafe (Adler, 2004). In general, "the older
the house, the worse shape it was in" and the longer someone lived in the house, "the more likely they were to have some kind of problem with the house"
(Adler, 2004). Among the problems reported with the houses, plumbing problems and leaky roofs were common (Adler, 2004). "Nearly a third of the homes have experienced water leaks and 12
percent have had rodent problems in the last 12 months" (Adler, 2004). Some had even more severe problems, such as "inadequate heat or even a lack of indoor plumbing" (Adler,
2004). However, when the residents are elderly, they are the least likely group of homeowners to make repairs (Adler, 2004). When people are on fixed incomes, money for repairs has
to compete with money for medical expenses, food, and other necessities. Its no surprise that poor housing goes along with low income (Adler, 2004). Across the nation, "more than half
of the rural elderly nationwide are poor" and that translates into poor maintenance and upkeep of rural housing (Adler, 2004).. In addition, rural homeowners in general need more help (Adler,
