Their beds have sheets and blankets and a comforter or bedspread. They have heating for the cold, or air conditioning, or at least fans for the heat.
The homeless young person is oftentimes lucky if he/she can find a cardboard box to sleep in. He/she must face the elements on a daily and nightly basis,
sometimes sleeping in dilapidated buildings. A dilapidated building oftentimes contains an infestation of vermin, and holes the walls and floors and there is no heat or air conditioner or
fan, but a somewhat minimal protection from the rain or snow or sun. If the child is lucky enough to find a shelter, he/she is dormitoried with a group
of people. There is no privacy. The young people are treated with no respect or compassion. Young people on the streets have become victims of society.
They are treated as refuse. They are "throwaways." This is a truly sad situation. Unfortunately, for the child on the street, living on the street is better than
the home situation he or she came from. The situation of runaway, homeless, and throwaway youths
is pathetic! The statistics are alarming! "The population of homeless children in the U. S. is estimated to range from 500,000 to more than 2 million" (Anonymous, 1989, 1358).
According to Simons and Whitbeck (1991), "hundreds of thousands of youth run away every year" (224). Simons and Whitbeck (1991) further say that "little consideration has been given
to the long-term effects of living on the street during the formative adolescent years" (224). Recurrent parental abuse is the main reason that young people are running away.
