have been made into films. Perhaps best known for his Westerns, Leonard is also a talented writer of detective fiction. This paper compares and contrasts two of the
colorful characters of his detective novel Rum Punch. Discussion The book is full of oddballs and freaks, every one of them memorable. But the two that stand out
are Max Cherry, the 57-year-old, disgruntled bail bondsman, and Ordell Robbie, a "light-skinned black guy" who sells guns to the highest bidder. They are, in a way, mirror images
of each other, though Max retains a sense of decency that Ordell lost long ago. The intriguing thing about them is that we get the feeling that Max could
go just as rotten as Ordell with very little provocation. Leonards genius is in creating characters that make us feel compassion for them, even when theyre doing awful things.
Ordell seems to be a much stronger character than Max at first, but only at first. He is confident, commanding, and moves easily through the shadowy world where he
lives. He is also a cold-blooded killer, as well as something of a satyr: hes keeping three women at the same time. Max has been a bail bondsman
for years, before that he was a cop. Hes seen it all and knows the seamy side of life. Hes split up from his wife Renee, who runs
an art gallery-they are a very odd couple indeed, and their relationship is one of mutual antipathy. But Max is a fairly typical working class stiff: hes got
an unusual job, but hes still trying to make a fairly honest living. Thats why its really interesting to watch him meet and fall for Jackie Burke, a stewardess
