the leaders, or the method of ruling is cruel to the majority of the people, or when too many cruel people exist in any given community, a society will break down, turning to an almost animalistic nature that is dark and dismal. Literature has a way of describing such realities through offering us goodness and the evil that exists in societies and communities. With this in mind the following paper first examines "Pedro Paramo" by Juan Rulfo and then examines "Candide" by Voltaire. The paper compares the two as they illustrate the destruction of a society through cruelty. Pedro Paramo Rulfos story is one that first presents us with the relationship between Juan Preciado and his dying mother. She makes him promise that he will visit her hometown of Comala and look for his father, who is Pedro Paramo. Juans mother tells him about the region, illustrating it as a beautiful and lush land that is almost like a mythological place. Juan pictures this grand vision and thinks of what he will find in Comala, clearly fantasizing about the magnificent place. When Juan arrives, however, he finds something completely different, a dreary and desolate reality. He presents us with images of a town that exists "at the very mouth of hell" (Rulfo NA). In this it is a reminder, not only of the past, but of the reality of a present that is intermingled with the fantasy. One of the most powerful figures in the story, a woman who was loved immensely by Pedros father, is Susana. When Pedro arrives in the town he discovers that his father has been dead for some time. And, his father was truly less than a savory character. He is a man who resorted to deception, as well as a man ...
