Kipling unconsciously because his poetic images are so memorable, well-crafted and apt in describing aspects of the human condition (Ricketts 112). One of these phrases, which have simply become part
of the "quasi-anonymous phrase-pool" of popular culture, is a the last line of Kiplings poem "If," which reads "-youll be a Man, my son!" (Ricketts 112). Analysis of this poem
indicates that Kiplings poetry is memorable because of his expertise at craft poetic images that convey the Victorian ideals of masculinity and fortitude in the face of adversity. Kiplings language
expertise is evident in his use of tone, rhythm, figurative language and mood in achieving this purpose. The tone of the poem is advisory, as each stanza offers advice
for life that encompasses the ups and downs, foibles and triumphs of personal experience. Each stanza begins with the word "If" and goes on to describe a specific aspects of
life and then continues to outline similar circumstances in a similar vein. For example, the first stanza begins: "If you can keep your head when all about you/Are losing theirs
and blaming it on you" and then goes on to indicate the importance of trust of not giving in to the attraction of lies or temptation to hate (Kipling lines
1-2). Kiplings expertise with rhythm and word choice within the framework of the poems structure also constitute a feature that makes his verse memorable. The rhythm of "If" is
iambic pentameter, which is inherently appealing, and each stanza follows an ABABCDCD rhyme scheme, which never seems forced or artificial, but has a naturalness that reflects the cadences of conversation.
