Royal absolutism prevailed in much of seventeenth century Europe. Although both France and England provided the two principle political models for
the rest of European, the countries differed considerably in the success of their political approach. These differences relate to the relative circumstances of the time and place. They
relate to differences in economics, geography and religion. Historical background is a particularly important factor in the relative success or failure of royal
absolutism in France and England. The Renaissance, of course, had consumed Europe during the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries. Most of the changes which resulted were economic in
their origin but the Renaissance would affect practically every aspect of European life from art to religion. There would be a massive financial expansion as well as a corresponding
population growth (Brewer, 1989). Interestingly, the Renaissance was neither wholly positive nor wholly negative in its impact to France and England.
There were tremendous literary and musical advancements but on the other hand there would be an even greater move towards colonization of other lands and consequently the subjugation or
at least the exploitation of the indigenous peoples in Africa, Asia and the American (Brewer, 1989). During the Renaissance a very
small group of the worlds peoples would exert control over the masses. In this sense the Renaissance was direly detrimental and would result in slavery, cultural and racial extinction,
and the rape of the worlds resources. The Renaissance was definitely a forward looking movement for the European peoples, this does not mean that it was a wholly positive
