been perverse, as contradictory statements were made and DNA evidence was completely ignored. This paper looks at Roy Criners case in depth. Discussion Reading accounts of the case, its impossible to avoid the conclusion that the verdict was unjust and that an innocent man spent ten years in prison for no adequate reason, other than the fact that he made some unfortunate statements. The question that really begs for an answer is why the jury and the Texas legal system saw fit to ignore solid DNA evidence; perhaps further investigation will reveal the thinking (or lack thereof) behind this verdict. Deanna Ogg was found beaten to death on September 27, 1986; her body was on a logging road in Montgomery County, Texas (Roy Criner, 2006). An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be "blunt trauma injuries to the head and multiple stab wounds to the neck" (Roy Criner, 2006). Ogg had also been the victim of a sexual assault (Roy Criner, 2006). Criner came under suspicion when he stated to friends that "he had picked up and had sex with a young woman and had to get rough with her" (Roy Criner, 2006). Criner was found guilty of raping and murdering Ogg based on his statements, and on "serology testing on the semen from vaginal and rectal specimens" (Roy Criner, 2006). Among the other evidence found on or near the body were a "large clump of blonde hair found clutched in Oggs right hand," and a Marlboro cigarette (Roy Criner, 2006). Trial testimony was conflicting and inconsistent, and the defense presented a case showing that Criner was working at the time the crime was supposedly committed (Roy Criner, 2006).
