the propertied class. The government of course, composed primarily of aristocrats who own property, want to protect themselves from thieves who might steal from them. Today, in American society, thieves
are seen as miscreants and the wealthy are viewed as deserving. They earned their money, or at least their ancestors did, and they have every right to hold onto their
property. In part, it seems that government protects the property of these individuals because most of the government officials are themselves property owners. Hence, the conspiracy aspect is somewhat reasonable.
On the other hand, stealing is morally wrong according to biblical teachings and perhaps intrinsic knowledge. In any event, although one can say that this is the case, Rousseau suggests
that the property gained by the upper class was not necessarily done ethically anyway. One can see many examples of this today, such as in Enron or the Martha Stewart
enterprise. Why should the government protect the property of those who not only obtained things in an immoral fashion perhaps, but who also hoard goods and leaves others in poverty?
Also, at least according to the theorist, government does this due to self-interest. In the United States for example, it seems that only the wealthy are able to enter the
political arena. Bill Clinton is an exception, but while that is the case, Bill and Hillary have since become very affluent, suggesting that government is entrenched in wealth. There is
no "right wing conspiracy" however as it seems that both parties equally boast wealthy members. The people who support democrats feel that these rich and powerful men will do the
right thing, but in truth, even if they try to do well by the masses, they have been raised a certain way and so have a particular perspective. That perspective
